Canadian Immigration Application Process

Canada's immigration system is made up primarily of the Economic Classes and the Family Class. Within these, there are several Canadian immigration categories by which you and your family may be eligible to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. The following is a summary of the various classes of immigration to Canada. RSS welcomes you to submit a free Canadian immigration assessment at any time.

Federal Immigration Categories: Federal programs refer to applications in which the candidate has a stated intended destination of any province other than Quebec.

- Skilled Worker
Canada's Skilled Worker immigration program is a point based system by which applicants earn a score on the basis of their qualifications in a number of defined factors. The passing score for a Federal Skilled Worker immigrant is presently 67 points.
   
- Alberta Immigration PNP
The US Experience Class of the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allows applicants with USA work experience (minimum 1 year) in certain occupations to receive fast-tracked immigration to Canada.
   
- Business Class The Business Class immigration programs are intended for applicants who seek to qualify on the basis of their ownership or management of a qualified business or self-employed activity. These include the Investor Immigration Program, the Entrepreneur program, and the Self Employed program.
   

Immigrant Investor

The immigrant investor program is for business owners and managers who wish to undertake to invest with a government approved fund. The Investor and immediate will obtain Canadian permanent resident status and may then apply for citizenship in Canada. Successful applicants do not have any further obligations regarding work or business creation.

Immigrant Entrepreneur

The entrepreneur program is for business owners and managers who are seeking to create a Canadian business and employ Canadians. Successful applicants have a fixed time in which to satisfy Canada's immigration authorities regarding the creation of the business and sufficient Canadian employment.

Self-Employed

Canada's self-employed program is intended for cultural, athletic, and farming business-persons who can demonstrate that they can support themselves and their families on the basis of income generated from their activities.
   
- Family Class Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to sponsor close family members. This immigration process comprises two steps, the assessment of the sponsor inland and the assessment of the applicant abroad. In some cases, the assessment of the applicant can also occur inland, if the candidate is already in the country.
   
- Group of Five Group of Five Private Sponsorship of Refugees allows 5 or more Canadians to financially sponsor a Convention Refugee from abroad.


Quebec Immigration Categories: The province of Quebec is unique in that it has the authority to select its own candidates for immigration. Unlike the nominee programs of other provinces, which do not preclude use of the regular federal program, all applicants destined for Quebec must first be approved by this province's immigration department, which maintains offices worldwide. Applicants who succeed in the province of Quebec do retain the right to mobility throughout Canada once approved.

- Skilled Worker
Skilled Worker applicants who wish to reside in Quebec must qualify under a separate point system used by this province. Although the factors assesses are similar to that of the federal system, the method of awarding points differs.
   
- Business Class Business immigration programs are for applicants who seek to qualify on the basis of their ownership or management of a qualified business or self-employed activity. These include the Investor Immigration Program, the Entrepreneur program, and the Self Employed program.
   

Immigrant Investor

Quebec's immigrant investor program is for business owners and managers who wish to undertake to invest with a government approved fund. The Investor and immediate will obtain Canadian permanent resident status and may then apply for citizenship in Canada. Successful applicants do not have any further obligations regarding work or business creation.

Immigrant Entrepreneur

The entrepreneur program is for business owners and managers who are seeking to create a Canadian business and employ Canadians. Successful applicants have a fixed time in which to prove the creation of a business and sufficient employment in the province of Quebec.

Self-Employed

Quebec's self-employed program is intended for self-employed business-persons in any field who can demonstrate a net worth of CAD$100,000.
   
- Family Class Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to sponsor close family members. This immigration process comprises two steps, the assessment of the sponsor inland and the assessment of the applicant abroad. In some cases, the assessment of the applicant can also occur inland, if the candidate is already in the country.

 

Other Processes

- Criminal Rehabilitation Potential permanent and temporary residents who have a record of criminal activity may be considered inadmissible to Canada. A criminal rehabilitation application can be pursued five years following the completion of any sentence in order to remove this restriction.
