New Brunswick Student Pilot Project



Presently, full-time international students in Canada are permitted to work on campus within the Province of New Brunswick.

On March 18, 2004, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, announced a two-year pilot project which will allow international students to work off campus, based on the following conditions:
  • Completion of two consecutive terms within the previous 12 months at a public college or university in New Brunswick;
  • Presently a full-time international student;
  • Completion of a consent for the Release of Personal Information to the Canadian Government and in addition a letter of support from the college or university the student is attending;
  • Maintenance of an acceptable academic standing;
  • Cannot have an earlier record with the Canadian Government of non-compliance with pilot project conditions.
Full-time international students will be able to apply for an open work permit upon completion of one year of full time study at a public college or university in New Brunswick. The work permit will allow up to 20 hours of work a week although the individual must be registered as a full-time student. This open work permit has a validity of up to one year at which time it must be renewed.

Judy Sgro, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration included the following in her speech of March 18, 2004;

“I am pleased that Canada and New Brunswick enjoy such a positive and cooperative relationship on immigration matters,” said Minister Sgro. “The pilot project on international students will improve the global competitiveness of New Brunswick’s post-secondary academic institutions,”.
