Citizenship Definitions

Charter of Rights & Freedoms: A document issued by a legislature outlining the principles of a constitution as granted to each individual.

Human Rights Commissions: A group of people who are officially authorized to review and act upon the rights (as freedom from unlawful imprisonment, torture, and execution) regarded as belonging fundamentally to all persons.

Ombudspersons: A government official who investigates complaints by private persons against the government or its functionaries (employees/public officials). Can also mediate fair settlements.

Legal Aid: Legal assistance provided by an organization specifically established for those unable to afford an attorney.
