An Immigrant Investor is a business person who has legitimately accumulated a net worth of at least CAD$800,000. As a business person, the candidate is required to have controlled a portion of the equity of a qualifying business, or must have been responsible for the management of the equivalent of five full-time employees.

The Immigrant Investor Program permits qualified candidates to obtain Canadian permanent resident status on the basis of an investment of $400,000 into a government approved fund. The investment is made for a five year period, and is intended to support Canadian business without exposing the investor to any of the risk associated with a direct investment into a company.

The investment is made for a period of five years. At the end of that five years, the Investor is eligible to receive the entire investment back in full. Alternatively, at the application stage, the Investor may elect to finance a portion of the investment, in which case an amount may be deducted from the initial investment to cover the cost of that financing.
