An overview of Canada’s
immigration categories and laws

Canada’s new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (“IRPA”) was implemented on June 28, 2002. Canada is an extremely popular country in which to live and the number of people who wish to immigrate to Canada far exceeds the number of foreign nationals Canada admits in any given year. IRPA governs the process through which immigrants are admitted to Canada.

Canada’s immigration program is based on non-discriminatory and universal principles. Applicants are assessed on standards that do not discriminate on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion or sex. Applicants are assessed on their ability to adapt to life in Canada and to settle successfully within its borders.
